#8: Tolerance

You know what I really, really, really hate? Intolerance.

I hate intolerance of any kind, but today it's intolerance towards people of a different sexual orientation than yourself.

Lately at school, there's been a lot of heat about gay people. Now, there aren't many gay people in my school, you could probably count them on two hands. My community is also very religion-based, and close-minded. We were going to have an assembly to promote tolerance at one point, and the religious parents complained that we were supporting them, condoning it, etc. That's the type of community I live in.

There have been anti-homophobia posters put up around the school. Some people have felt the need to rip them down, and make their own posters saying things like, "It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve." One person even went so far as to say that gay people committing suicide is just evolution, and acted like they had no problem with it.

I just do not understand what the hell is wrong with people. So what if a guy likes a guy? Or a girl likes a girl? It doesn't concern them. And as for the "oh, they like guys/girls, they're going to try to hit on me because I'm one." That's complete bull shit. I'm not attracted to every guy who walks by, and guys aren't attracted to every girl who walks by. And if someone has an attitude of hating gays, chances are the gay person they hate isn't going to be the least bit interested.

One of my really good friends is gay. I love him to death, we have almost everything in common, and he makes my days at school so much more better. I hate to see this kind of discrimination against him. And with such a small school population, it's centered around the few people who are gay. It kills me to see that people can act that way towards such an amazing guy.

I really just think that people should learn to accept and tolerate others. And if they can't do that, to mind their own damn business, and don't get involved in what doesn't concern them.

That's my rant for the day. I hope it was more interesting than a run through of my day. I'll see you guys tomorrow.

  1. Kudos Melissa for taking the time to write about this issue.

It makes me so angry how people can be so ridiculous about these things. The fact that people around your school actually tore down the posters promoting openness is really worrisome. The fact that they use religion as their backing just makes it even more stupid lol.

Not everyone holds the same mores and values; people definitely need to accept that.

Much love to you and the gay community in your town,
    Sandy :)

  2. Don't get me wrong, I agree that we should be a little more tolerant towards the homosexual community. But even though those poster are quite offensive, they are telling the truth.

God did intend that marriage was to be between a man and a woman.
    1 Corinthians 6:9-10
9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Homosexuality is a perversion, but the way that those people are dealing with it is completely uncalled for. It is no different then when people run out and tell them that because they aren't Christian they are going to hell. You and I both know that yelling to people that they're going to hell isn't going to change their minds, and might even drive them away. And it is the same here.

We need to gently bring them to the realization that what they are going is offensive to God so that they can choose to change it themselves.
