Canada for the Gold

There's less than an hour until the hockey game between Canada and Russia. Now, I don't usually get into sports, I'm not athletic at all. But there's just something about the Olympics, that I can't help but be interested in it. Especially since it's in Vancouver this year. I just feel so... connected to people in my country through the Olympics. I love the sense of nationalism it brings.

I really love the figure skater who performed just recently, and her mother JUST died the other night. She was beautiful, and it must have taken so much courage to do her performance. I really admire her for that.

I also mentioned to my mum earlier tonight, that I find it really ironic that we're so varied as far as our heritage goes in Canada and the US, and we're competing against where we came from. But it shows that we're independent, and that we are our own country.

Anyways, I just wanted to write a quick blog, since I'm pretty excited for this game. I have so much confidence in our Olympic men's hockey team, and if they don't win, I think it'll be really close, and that they'll make their country proud.

  1. You've fallen into the trap...

I still feel detached and indifferent to the Olympics for three main reasons.

    1. they're not anything new. They come around every 2 years (every four if you count winter and summer separately). The location this year is in Canada, big deal. That should not change how important they are(which leads into point 2)

    2. Canada has ALWAYS sent athletes to the Olympics. Why should we support them more because they're fighting on home ground? Why do we feel more attached to them when they have an advantage? In two years when the Olympics are hosted somewhere else will we still be as patriotic and proud of our athletes? We were not in Bejing, so why are we now?

    3. They are still sports, which I derive no enjoyment from watching. (this last one is admittedly a personal preference)

  2. I guess I was just too young, and just didn't care before. Now that they're so close, I'm realizing that it's really fun to support my country, even if I'm not really into sports.

  3. I wasn't referring to you as a person. I meant the country as a whole.

The only reason the Olympics is such a big deal this year is because we are hosting it. When some other country is hosting in 2 years it will make a splash. But there won't be any waves like this year.
